1. What does good customer service mean to you in this industry?
Call me. That’s the whole thing.
My cell phone is the registered business line for Centauri. If something goes sideways on your system, you’re not filing a ticket and sitting in a queue; you’re calling the general manager directly. We back it up with a 24-hour response guarantee, but in practice it’s usually a lot faster than that.
Solar is a 25-year relationship, not a one-day install. Plenty of companies are great to deal with the week you sign. Customer service in this industry means being just as reachable in year eight as you were on day one.
2. What’s unique about installing solar in Minnesota? What problems are homeowners looking to solve?
A few things make Minnesota its own animal.
First, our utility rates keep climbing, and that’s the problem almost every homeowner we sit down with is actually trying to solve. It’s not really about panels. They’re tired of paying more every year for something they have zero control over and can’t predict. Solar lets them lock that number in.
Second, people assume Minnesota is a bad solar state, and it isn’t. Panels are more efficient in the cold, and we produce more than most folks expect. Snow is a shorter story than people think, too.
Third, and this is the part homeowners don’t see, Minnesota is a licensed trade state. Every one of our installs is done by licensed electricians. That makes solar cost more here than it does in a lot of markets, and I’d rather explain that cost than cut the corner. Roof penetrations in a freeze-thaw climate and snow load on a mounting system are not things you want somebody guessing at. Done wrong, you find out about it four winters later.
We also do roofing, so we can tell a homeowner honestly whether their roof has the life left to put a 25-year system on top of it. That conversation saves people a lot of money and a lot of grief. Or help them get anything from a 15-year to a lifetime warranty on their new roof.
3. What drove you to start working with Solar Insure, and what impact has it had?
The biggest thing standing between a homeowner and a decision usually isn’t price. It’s fear. They’re sitting there wondering what happens in ten years if the company that installed this thing is gone.
That’s a hard question to answer with your own warranty, because the homeowner is being asked to bet on you still being in business. Solar Insure takes that bet off the table. The coverage sits with an independent party, so the answer stops being “trust us” and starts being something they can actually hold.
The practical impact is that it moves people off the fence. It gives our team a straight answer to the one objection that used to stall deals out. It’s also raised the floor on what we’re willing to install, because you can’t put questionable equipment behind coverage like that.
